I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard this. And every time, I can’t help but shake my head a little.
It’s a lovely sentiment, but I’d like to clear something up—it’s not luck. Luck is winning the lottery or finding yourself in the front row at a Harry Styles concert because they sold too many tickets (true story—it happened to my sister). That is luck.
What I do today, however, is not about luck. It’s the result of years of effort, dedication, and the kind of perseverance that keeps you moving forward, even when the path feels impossibly difficult.
From the outside, it might look easy. But while others have stability—a steady paycheck, regular hours, and the chance to completely unplug after work—I wake up every single day and choose this life. And that choice comes with its own unique challenges.
I choose the sleepless nights, carried away by inspiration that refuses to let me rest.
I choose the long hours in front of my screen, editing until my head aches (yes, my fault, I admit).
I choose the financial uncertainty, the months where I’m stretched thin and questioning everything.
I choose the unpredictability—whether I’ll be able to build a stable life, whether I’ll be able to start a family someday, or whether I’ve made a mistake and this journey is all for nothing.
And yes, I also choose to navigate the doubts and insecurities that come with creative work. The imposter syndrome that lurks around every corner, and the occasional moments when I wonder if I’m good enough.
But despite all that, I still choose this path. Every single day.
Because while it’s not easy, I know deep down that I wouldn’t want to do anything else. The passion I have for this job is bigger than my fear of failure. I believe that passion—real, gut-wrenching, heart-thumping passion—is worth fighting for.
...but it doesn’t appear out of thin air. It’s something you build piece by piece, day by day.
The “dream job” isn’t about having everything figured out or living a stress-free life. It’s about finding something you care about so deeply that you’re willing to weather the storms to make it work. It’s about showing up for yourself, even when it’s hard, and believing that what you’re building has value—not just to others, but to you.
For me, my dream job is the one I’ve crafted with love, determination, and a fair bit of trial and error. It’s not perfect. There are moments when I second-guess myself, moments when I wish things were easier. But then I remember: I’m doing what I love. I’m creating, connecting, and growing in ways that make me feel alive.
That’s what makes it a dream—not because it’s flawless, but because it’s mine.
If I do have a touch of luck, it’s in having grown up with a remarkable role model. My mum—an independent, self-employed woman—taught me the importance of believing in myself. She showed me that it’s possible to make a living doing what you love, even if it seems unconventional or a little daunting.
Happiness, I think, requires a certain level of bravery. You need to take risks, to trust yourself, and to be willing to stumble along the way.
So, no, this life isn’t about luck. It’s about hard work, late nights, and a whole lot of heart. And it’s also about the deep satisfaction of knowing I’m following a path that feels true to me.
If you’re standing at the edge, wondering whether to take the leap, let me reassure you: it’s worth it. Every step, every challenge, every moment of doubt—it’s worth it.
